The Society is delighted to announce the launch of the Climate Science Special Interest Group (CS SIG) which will aim to sustain, encourage and progress activity in climate science.
The group’s main responsibilities will include providing an update to the Society on the latest advances in climate science, and their implications for society. The group will work closely with the Society’s Climate Science Communications Group on joint activities, such as briefing papers, statements and events on climate science, as well as organise meetings on climate science, the impacts of climate change and technical solutions for both mitigation and adaption.
David Warrilow OBE has been asked by the Society to lead the CS SIG. Prior to retiring from the civil service in January 2016, David was a senior government science advisor and international negotiator on climate change and environmental issues. He led the UK delegations to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for over 20 years and was a lead negotiator for the EU on the scientific issues covered in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). David also managed a significant research programme at the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and previously undertook research at the Met Office on climate modelling, observing systems, and hydrometeorology.
The Climate Science SIG will be overseen by a committee of eight members, drawn from a cross-section of climate scientists, decision makers and industry. The Climate Science SIG will aim to meet twice a year, with their first meeting held in October 2016. More details about the group can be found here.
