英文摘要: An area of low-pressure developed over the west-central Bay of Bengal during the second week of October in 2020. It further intensified into a deep depression and moved gradually towards the north-west resulting in extreme rainfall over Andhra Pradesh and Telangana during October 13–14, 2020. Extreme rainfall events affected both states submerging low-lying regions, triggering home collapses, prompting the evacuation of more than 90,000 people to safer places and causing heavy casualities. This study focuses on monitoring the flood event of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana using satellite observations. Nagarkurnool, Cyberabad, Hyderabad, Khairatabad, LB Nagar, Ranga Reddy and Osmansagar were the most affected districts of the states due to heavy rainfall. Nagarkurnool received the maximum rainfall of about 75 mm at 13:30 UTC on October 13. Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Nagarkurnool recorded cumulative rainfall in excess of 400 mm on October 13, 2020. The sudden and heavy downpour from multiple extreme rain events on October 13 caused high river discharge which resulted in extreme flash floods over these districts. Results reported in this study highlight the significance of remote sensing observations for exploring flash flood events. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. part of Springer Nature.
