英文简介: | Course dates in October 2017 to be confirmed.
This introductory course, relevant to engineers, coastal landowners, regulators and operating authorities, combines lecture with hands-on exercises and explores the history, processes and modelling of changes at the coastline.
Delegates will gain practical advice that can be directly implemented into the design methods for coastal engineering and management schemes. Each topic is supported with real life case studies allowing delegates to explore the problems which may arise in a project and the various ways to overcome them. This course covers the theory and principles necessary for all those at the start of their coastal management and engineering careers.
Course content
Coastal management planning - An overview of the reasons for and history of changes and management of coastlines.
Waves and tides - An introduction and requirements for coastal management.
Beach sediment transport/ morphology processes.
Planning coastal management and engineering schemes: An introduction to options, appropriate methods and assessing the potential effects of such works.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course participants will understand:
the types of problems that need to be solved in coastal engineering and management;
how wave conditions, tidal flows and levels and their joint occurrence can be evaluated;
how coastlines of different types have evolved and are likely to change in the future;
how alternative methods of reducing risks of erosion or flooding are planned and designed;
issues relating to the design, performance, sustainability and effects of any type of infrastructure that needs to be engineered with knowledge of coastal processes.
Course tutors
Alan Brampton, with over 45 years’ experience in coastal management; co-author of CIRIA beach management manual, the SNH dune erosion management manual and author of the reports that defined coastal cells around the UK, has outstanding experience and knowledge to support the topics in this course.
Belen Blanco, co-creator of the course, has over 15 years’ experience in numerical and physical modelling and extensive practice in leading classroom training; she has project managed multiple regional management plans and contributes to the development of several models of coastal (morphology) change. The two course leaders are joined by other members of HR Wallingford staff who will deliver sessions covering their specific areas of expertise. |
