英文简介: | This two-day course introduces the concepts of flood risk analysis and management within the context of existing UK policies and legislation. The lectures and exercises are informed by the needs of Local Authorities’ and the Environment Agency, and updated to include issues of current relevance. Designed as a suitable follow-on from the two-day river hydrology and hydraulics course, it is ideal for those involved in river and flood risk management. Although the course focusses on river and urban flooding, much of the course content also has relevance to tidal and coastal flooding.
Course content
Policy and legislation (UK and EC legislation and implications for UK stakeholders).
Overview of the assessment of flood hazards.
Introduction to assessing flood risk in terms of economic damage and risks to people.
Climate change and its relevance to flood risk.
Flood mitigation.
Introduction to Flood Risk Assessments.
Overviews of SuDS and Flood risk assessments for development sites
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the participants will:
be aware of the key policies and legislation of relevance to the UK;
understand the concepts used in analysing flood risk;
understand the purpose of flood risk analysis and management within the context of development planning;
know what a Flood Risk Assessment should contain and how to undertake such an assessment;
have an up-to-date knowledge of how to take climate change into consideration in Flood Risk Assessments;
be aware of joint probability issues;
have developed a basic knowledge of SuDS and drainage principles and understand the importance of integrated urban flood risk management.
Course tutors
The course is designed and delivered by experts from our flood and water management groups. With over 150 years’ experience to share with delegates, their wide-range of expertise in this sector and involvement in consultancy and research projects within the UK and overseas, includes for example; preparation of Flood Risk Assessments for a range of developments, Catchment Flood Management plans, flood hazard and risk mapping and the development of urban drainage models. Other responsibilities of the tutors include; the current Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Flood Risk Management; the European Commission’s Technical Secretariat for their Working Group on Floods and author of the SuDs manual. |
