英文简介: | This is an ideal training course for anyone who requires an introduction to fluvial hydrology and hydraulics in relation to managing floods. The course materials and exercises use real-life examples to assist participants’ understanding of concepts and principles. This two day course is designed for those new to the subjects or require a refresher. It is suitable for Local Authority, Envrionment Agency, Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Natural Resources water staff and consultants as well as those involved in catchment and fisheries.
Course content
Hydrometric analysis.
Estimating flows and flow hydrographs.
River flow processes.
Conveyance.
Flow resistance and roughness.
Behaviour and modelling of river structures.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course participants will:
have developed a knowledge of hydrometric data, why it is needed, what to collect and where to collect it; know how to construct a rating curve from river level and flow data;
be aware of the different methods for estimating flood peaks and hydrographs, and know where and when to use them;
understand river processes relating to morphology and sediments;
have developed a knowledge of basic open channel flow principles;
understand how water levels are calculated from flows; know what affects water levels at low and high flows
The course programme is delivered by six tutors from our flood and water management groups, each focussing on their area of expertise. With combined experience of leading a wide range of national and worldwide consultancy and research projects they will share their knowledge through taught sessions, exercises and group discussions. Between them, the tutors have authored in excess of 200 journal and conference papers in addition to publications, including co-authoring the text book for river hydraulics: ‘Practical channel hydraulics - roughness, conveyance and afflux’. |
